Information on Issac Jarvis was obtained from a summary of his Civil War Pension Papers provide Patrick L. Tombeau by A.J. larabell, amateur genealogist, whose mather was Mary Esther Jarvis, daughter of Ralph James Jarvis.
Issac Jarvis enlisted under the name of Isaac Jervais on December 13, 1963 in the 15th Regiment at Grossse Pointe, MI. On January 4, 1864, Joseph Gervais was discharged from the army because Isaac agreed to take his place. Whether this is Joseph Gervais his brother or his father is not clear. But his father, born in1809, would have been 54 in 1863, so it may be he enlisted for his brother Joseph, who would have been in his late teens in 1863. The Civil War records of Joseph Gervais should be obtained from the National Archives in Washington to resolve this issue.
The army got the worst of the deal, however, as one month later, on February 10, 1864, Joseph's substitute died in at the Army post hospital in Grand Rapids of "inflmation of the lungs" and never served. This was probably pneumonia, considering the time of the year.
On April 29, 1879, Sophia Jarvis, age 70, made out a "mother's application for pension". She stated she was the wife of Joseph Gervais, Sr., and had married on November 10, 1828 at St. Phillip's Church in Montreal on the est side. (St Philippe de la Prairie). Drouin Insitute of Genealogy states the marriage was on November 9 and is proably correct due to their access to marriage recods of that Church. Fr. Pidgeon performed the marriage. She state that the church records were destroyed in 1844. There may have been a fire at St. Philippe's in 1844, which she witnessed, but she is mistaken about such records being destroyed.
Other ancestors of Patrick L. Tombeau have come from this parish and their records were still intact prior to 1844.
Isaac Jarvis is buried in White Cemetery in Newport, MI. He was 18 years old at death in 1864, making his birth year about 1846. His father Joseph Jarvis/Gervais is also buried in this Cemetery.
The following was taken from "Record of Service of Michigan Volunteers in the Civil War (1861-1865)" compiled by the Adjutant General's Office in Lansing, MI.
"Enlisted in unassigned, Fifteenth Infantry December 30, 1863, at Grosse Pointe (MI) for three years, age 17, Mustered Janaury 8, 1864. Died February 11, 1864. Buried at Indianapolis, IN." (Vol. 15, pg 85).
The above burial place is in error. As above, he was buried in White Cemetery, Newport, MI. When he died in Grand Rapids, his body was returned home by his brother, Ralphael James Jarvis, according to Ralph's son, Charles J. Jarvis. | Jarvis, Isaac (I06915)
