Stella LaVoy was born 16 December 1871 in Stateline, the LaVoy family home, according to her death certificate, which year coincides with the 1880 OH and MI Censuses enumerating her family. Her brother Frederick stated she died of pneumonia as a result of burns received in an explosion when she poured gasoline into the oil of an oil stove to make it burn faster. Her death certificate, however, states that the cause of death was "Embolus following third degree burns of back, right side, right arm and both breasts." Her husband was George Wenz, Sr., who was born 21 November 1868 in Lucas County, OH. They were married in about 1888 and had six children, the last being born in 1908. They apparently separated and or divorced at that point as a 1910 Michigan Census indicates that she was living alone with her four youngest children. Her two oldest boys, Louis and George Wenz, Jr., were boarding in Toledo. George Wenz, Sr. was a railroad man for part of his life, a conductor, according to the 1920 Wood County, Lake Twp, Oh Federal Census. The Census states that both of his parents had come from Germany, but that he could speak Enlgish. His father was Louis Wenz the Elder. His wife was listed as Josephine and reeaarch by others indicates her maiden name was Lara. George Wenz, Sr., died 3 November 1921 in Lake Township, wood county, OH, and was buried in Forrest Cemetery, Toledo, OH. His death certificate indicates that he was a farmer on the Douglass Farm when he died. No cause of death was listed in the transcription of the death certificate, a copy of which is below.
In a couple of LaVoy Family reunion pictures, there are people whose last name is Wenz present. These people were known as my mother's (Lucille Dusseau Tambeau) aunts and uncles, but she states they were only older cousins. The Monroe Historical Libary obits or those of Toledo, OH may give further leads on this branch of the LaVoy Family.
The 1900 Federal Census, Lucas County, Ohio, Port Lawrence, Precinct A, 15th Ward, June 1, 1900 locates this family as living at 1245 Nebraska Ave., Toledo, MI. Stella was born in December 1871 in Michigan as were both her parents in Michigan. George was born in Ohio in November 1868, but both parents were born in Germany.
The parents are listed with four children: (1) Louis, age 10, born in Michigan in June 1889, who is in school. (2) George Wenz, Jr., age 9, born in 1891 (no month noted) in Ohio; (3) Jenney Wenz, age 3, born May 1897, in Ohio; (4) William Wenz, age 6/12, born December 1899, in Ohio.
The whole family is not listed in Ohio in the 1910 Census. The two older sons, Louis and George, Jr are listed as age 20 and living as boarders in Toledo, OH. While the rest of the family is located in Bedford Twp., Monroe Co., MI. She is without husband and age 38 working as a farm laborer. The following children are listed in the household:(1) Jennie, age 18, born in Ohio; (2) William, age 11, born in Ohio; Clarence, age 5, born in Ohio; Helen, age 2, born in Michigan. Bedford Twp. was the home of her father, Moses LaVoy and step-mother, Sarah Anne Knaggs. | LaVoy, Stella (I00184)
