Note from Terry Shebel, nephew of Edward Shebel:
Yes, Edward Shebel - born circa 1917, was my uncle.....killed in world war 2 in General Montgomery's offensive over the Rhine river in 1944....Killed in a glider crash, as I've heard.....Just wondered if his daughter, Geraldine was still alive.....Edward's wife, Agnes either, left the family home abruptly after Edward's death, or was divorced ealier.....Edward's home was left standing for many decades after the war....My brother walked thru it in 1971 and found many letters from Edward, at war, to Agnes....As if the marriage was ended abruptly....Regards, Terry Shebel

Obituaries indicte that Toussaint and his family came to SD in 1885 from Monroe County, MI. His son Vollie's obit indicates they settled near Bijou Falls and Cahmberlain. Toussaint died in the house he was born in which at that time was owned by his brother Francis in Erie, MI. This home was originally Charles LaVoy Sr.'s homestead.
On December 27, 1910, he left Belle Fourche, S.D., age 74, in the company of his son, Franklin, to visit his brothers in Erie, Michigan, where he caught double lobar pneumonia and died two months later.
While Toussaint and his family first settled near Chamberlain SD, two years before his death settled on a ranch in Hoover, SD, near Belle Fourche. He is buried with his wife in Pine Slope Cemetery in the latter city. A photograph of the cemetery site exists in the photo collection and pictures of his family's log cabin and family. Rollie Knaggs states that Toussaint paid Dennis Knaggs (Rollie's older brother) $50 for the wagon Toussaint took his family in to South Dakota.
He is described a s a family man, kind to all, and without an enemy (See several obits for other details)
One obituary from a Monroe County paper contains a poem on his passing:
"Sisters, brothers, friends so dear
Father's spirit has flown to a brighter sphere.
No more on earth will we have him to love;
For God has called him to that home above.
God's ways we do not understand,
His wisdom we do not command,
God's purposes we do not know:
This is not given to man below.
Twas hard to part with one so dear,
We could not, would not check the rising tear
We've met him so oft in times of yore,
Must it be now we'll meet him no more?
No, this can not be for God has said
A crown of glory waits the victor's head.
We may meet him, yes, on that better shore,
Meet him in Heaven where parting is no more. | LaVoy, Toussaint (I00053)
