      Notes for Antoine Fortier
Anthoyne (Antoine) Forestier, son of Noel Forestier and Martha Golle, was born at Dieppe, Normandy. We find the following entry in the parish records of St-Jacques de Dieppe: (On 26 June 1644, Anthoyne, son of Noel Forestier & Martha Golle, named by Anthoyne Forestiere & Jeanne Cauvin). On 3 June 1664, he was confirmed in the Catholic faith at the Hotel-Dieu de Quebec. He became a farmer and a fisherman. On march 1st, 1671, he purchased a farm in the parish of St. Laurent on the island of Orleans, downriver from Quebec City. On November 21, 1677, he passed a contract of marriage with Marie Madeleine Cadieu, daughter of Charles Cadieu, Sieur de Courville and Michelle Madeleine Macard. In 1685 Antoine Fortier became the proprietor of a small ship named the "St. Anne" and in 1693 he entered into contacts with farmers of the Tadoussac region to undertake trips to Chicoutimi and Papinachois. Antoine Fortier passed away in the spring of 1707 while on one of these fishing expeditions.

      Notes for Noel Forestier
The name "Forestier" was widespread in Dieppe, Normandy, France, in the 17th century. The name signifies "inhabitant of the forest" or "forestry worker" and evolved from the latin word "forestarius". Noel Forestier, accompanied by his wife and son Anthoyne, came to New France before 1664 and it is shortly thereafter that the family name was shortened to Fortier. Noel was a sailor and also worked as a servant to Charles Bazire, a wealthy merchant of Quebec City. Noel died at St. Laurent on the Ile of Orleans, Quebec and was buried on the 30th of March 1683.

Notes for Antoine Fortier: He came from France with his father in 1665. They originally established in Beauport but after a few years they moved across the island of Orleans and established themselves on the South side at a spot called L'Arbre sec. He was a master of a fishing barque during this period. A deed exists between Ouis Couillard, sieur de l'Espinay, Antoine Fortier, Francois James, and Jacques Lozier where the four men agree to equally split the profits of fish received from a fishing venture towards the isle rouge in the current of the St Lawrence

Antoine is the first cousin of David and Jacques Asselin.

      His origin
Antoine, son of Noel Fortier and Marie-Marthe Golle, was baptized at St-Jacques de Dieppe, in Normandy (France), on June 26 1644. He came to Nouvelle France with his father and settled in Beauport, near Quebec. The first mention in the archives is June 3rd 1664 when he was "confirmé" at the Hotel-Dieu in Quebec.

      Antoine, son of Antoine
On January 22, 1706, Antoine, the eldest son, married Madeleine Noel, who gave him nine children. He was a strong worker: his marriage contract shows that he already owned two large properties, one at Riviere du Sud and another in St-Jean on Ile d'Orleans.

Successively, the others sons of Antoine Sr. formed marriage bonds with the families of Ruel, Blouin, Manseau, Leclerc, Dumas, Fontaine and Plante.

An inventory made by notary Jacob on October 1708 states that Antoine Sr. died at Papinachois on the Assomption river, during the "festes de la Pentecoste derniere" [a religious celebration situated after Easter so on June 12, 1707]. The inventory revealed an eight page listing of his assets including the "La Sainte-Anne" and a 90 acre plot of land on Ile d'Orleans.

His wife, Marie-Madeleine, passed away at St-Laurent on February 26, 1715 after a brief seven days illness, a few months before the accidental deaths of her two sons Jean-Francois and Nicolas. She was buried on the south side of their land on the Ile d'Orleans.

A seaman's spirit from father to son
In the 1667 census, Noel Fortier is 50 years old and listed as "working as a sailor at Charles Bazire". His trade is "perceur de navire" or hole maker, a specialized work in shipbuilding which consists in perforating holes in the various components making up a ship. Antoine is more interested in commercial fishing and navigation.

The few years spent at Beauport give our two ancestors the time to assess their career possibilities and to stabilize their financial situation. Antoine seems to know the road to prosperity at a young age judging from an act in front of notary Rageot dated October 17 1667 in which he signs an agreement with three partners to share equally in the profits of commercial fishing of seals off L'isle Rouge in the St-Lawrence River. This was a very lucrative business in that period.

Four years later, still with notaire Rageot, Antoine signs another contract which makes him the owner of a 3 acre land tract on Ile D'Orleans (near Quebec) in the parish of St-Laurent, at a site called L'Arbre Sec. Nearby, there is a naval construction site which makes it an ideal location for the family.

      The wedding of Antoine Fortier
In 1677, our ancestor decides to marry Marie-Madeleine Cadieux, daughter of Charles Cadieux, sieur de Courville, and of Madeleine Macart, both having a high social status and associated with the richest families of the colony.

The marriage contract is prepared by none other man than Michel Fillion, the royal notary, who is a neighbor of the Cadieux family. The signature of the marriage contract is attended by many well known dignitaries but Noel, Antoine's father is not present, probably due to ill health.

A small freight boat on the St-Lawrence and Saguenay Rivers
On January 12 1693, Antoine seals a deal in front of a notary with "Les sous-fermiers de la traite de Tadoussac and monsieur Macart" to make three haulage trips with boat and crew between Chicoutimy and Papinachois. His river boat, named the "La Sainte-Anne" (capacity of 25 tonneaux") is powered by sail.

In becoming the owner of his own boat, Antoine shows an entrepreneurial spirit and lots of determination. He is also a religious man : the name he chose for his boat proves the great confidence he had in Ste-Anne.

      Family life
Antoine spends little time with his family during the navigation season but his trade brings them much prosperity. Life on Ile d'Orleans goes on calmly but it is animated by the presence of ten children which includes eight boys, ensuring continuity of the Fortier name in Nouvelle-France.

In 1683 Noel Fortier passes away at 90 years of age. Noel has been a vital ingredient in Antoine's success especially in the first years of their settlement.

A man with a big heart
Antoine is a man with solid religious convictions, a man of heart that is loved and respected of all. During his many trips on the St-Lawrence River, settlers look forward to meeting him because of his wise advice and possible material assistance.

In October 1703, he accepted to become the guardian of Marie-Francoise Favreau dit Desloriers, the four year old daughter of a settler who had lost his wife and fortune, and who could not take care of his family. Lets not forget that Antoine and Marie-Madeleine had eleven mouths to feed : Madeleine, Antoine, Jean-Baptiste, Charles, Michel, Pierre-Noel, Guillaume, Jean-Francois, Nicolas, Louis, and Joseph. On June 11, 1703 the Fortier's had lost their last child, Anne, at the age of a year and a half. The adopted girl took the place of Anne.

Antoine's death was recorded in Riviere L'Assomption aux Papinachois inventory 10-11-1708 by Father Jacob.

Antoine Fortier was born in Dieppe, from the marriage of Noel Fortier & Marthe Golle. Take note that in France the name Fortier was always written as «Forestier». It's only at their arrival in Nouvelle-France that it changed to «Fortier». His father was a hole maker for ships.

He arrived in the new world around 1663 with his father. After a short period in Beauport, the Fortier went to settled down on Ile d'Orleans.

As Noel was building little boats on the island, Antoine was more interested in "commercial" fishing. thanks to his hability, Antoine soon became "Maitre de barque", that is becoming the owner of his own boat and crew. A notarial contract from the archives of notary Rageot, in 1667, revealed that he passed a deal with Louis Couillard, Francois James and Jacques Lozier in which they agreed to equally share the profits from the seals fishing near "L'Isle Rouge" on the St-Lawrence River.

The seals were sought-after for the oil they produced. A good and clear oil having the advantage of not producing a bad odor like the one from porpoise. A barrel of seal oil was sold at that time for 50 to 55 livres. So if in one day we know that they captured 10 to 15 selas, it is easy to conceive who lucrative was that type of fishing.

Moreover if we judge by his marriage, Antoine Fortier surely made it to economic wealth. In November of 1677, he married Marie-Madeleine Cadieu and in doing that, he was getting united with one of the richest family in Nouvelle-France. Many dignitaries and noble familiy representants were acting as witness at his marriage.
