Notes |
- Mary Tambo, the tenth and last child of William Tambo, Sr., and Elizabeth Fitzsimmons, was born 4 January l9l7 in Olyphant, PA., according to her baptismal certificate in St. Patrick's Church, in Olyphant, PA. Her death certificate, filed in New Castle, PA, indicates that she died 5 October l922, of gasteroenteritis and convulsions at 4 pm. Her death records at St. Patrick's have not been sought at this writing.
She was ill two days before she died. It is this child who is said repeatedly by family members and neighbors who were children at the time that she died of eating green apples. It is not clear how this would be possible in October.
Her birth certificate, filed in New Castle, PA, gives her first name as Catherine. But her baptismal certificate at St. Patrick's gives her only the name of "Maria" in Latin. Her death certificate states her birth was 4 October l9l7, rather than 4 January l9l7.
Such a confusion of names and dates might imply the existence of another child, named Catherine. But such is not the case, according to the testimony of her brothers and sisters who survived into adulthood. It is most likely that Mary died of influenza and high fever. However, one cannot rule out that the date of death is also misrecorded on her death certificate and the burial records need to be consulted at St. Patrick's to confirm this death date.
Lois Smith Covert, the daughter of Pearl Tambeau, Mary's older sister, inherited a large oval portrait of Mary.
Mary is buried with her maternal grandparents, Peter Fitzsimmons and Ann Joyce in St. Patrick's Cemetery, Blakely, PA. Their grave is marked by a large obelisk tombstone.
According to Mary's sister, Pearl Tambeau, Mary's grave was once marked with a fake marble tombstone, but it crumbled in time and the rubble was removed by the caretakers. The area of burial is 7-8 rows from the bottom of the hill on which St. Patrick's Cemetery is found off Highway 6 In Blakely, PA. It is also near the graves of her sisters, Frances and Ann Tambo, who died in l905 and l902 respectively and were buried in the plot of their maternal aunt and uncle George Roberts, Sr., and Anna Fitzsimmons Roberts.
