Notes |
- Elizabeth Rohrer Tombow's Ancestry
Before continuing with the descendants of William Tombow, Jr., and Elizabeth Rohrer, the ancestry of Elizabeth Rohrer as it is now known is recorded here.
The Rohrer Family is a distinguished family of Lancaster County of Alsatian Origin. Rohrerstown, Pennsylvania, in Lancaster County, is named after a member of this family.
Two obituaries found in the Fluck Family Bible, a Bible once owned by Lydia Tombow Fluck, the daughter of William Tombow, Jr., and Elizabeth Rohrer, have led to strong circumstantial evidence concerning Elizabeth Rohrer's ancestry. This Bible is currently in the possession of Ralph ("Pete") and Vivian Fluck of Rock Falls, Illinois. Pete is the grandson of Lydia Tombow Fluck through her son John fluck.
The obituaries are of a Mordecai Rohrer and his daughter Edith R. Snively of Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, and date from about l9l0. Lydia Tombow Fluck's Bible contains the obituaries of other relatives. Lydia had left Lancaster County, as a small child, over fifty years before these deaths. These obituaries could only be of close relatives after so long a time.
The ages of the individuals suggest that Mordecai Rohrer was an uncle of Lydia (her mother Elizabeth Rohrer's younger brother) and that his daughter, Edith R. Snively, was Lydia's first cousin.
The l850 Federal Census for Lancaster County lists only one Mordecai Rohrer. He is living with his sister, Lydia, and his parents, Samuel and Elizabeth Rohrer. He is noted to be a shoemaker, confirming his identity with Mordecai Rohrer in the obituary. (l850 Federal Census, Lancaster County, PA, pg. 72, dwelling #l00)
The l860 Census notes that Samuel Rohrer, 74, and his wife, Elizabeth, 69, are now living with their daughter Lydia who is married to John Wuller in W. Lampeter, Lancaster County, Pennsylvania. Lydia and John have two children, E.A. Wuller (a daughter age 4 years) and Mordecai Wuller, age five months. (l860 Federal Census, Lancaster Co, W. Lampeter Township, p.79l, dwelling #20)
Further substantiating Samuel and Elizabeth Rohrer as the parents of Elizabeth Rohrer Tombow is the name of the latter's eldest son: Samuel R. Tombow. The name Samuel does not exist on the Tombow side of the family. German families frequently named the eldest son after the maternal grandfather.
The further researches into this matter by Peggy Sheets Manning, a Certified Genealogist in Lancaster, PA, have been included with this history. In addition, the published scrapbooks of Mrs. Susan Henning of Suspension Bridge, New York, on the Rohrer Family and two published articles on the Neff Family, who are ancestors to our branch of the Rohrer Family, are included. Elizabeth Rohrer Tombow's ancestry has been reconstructed as follows from the above research:
Elizabeth Rohrer Tombow was the daughter of two cousins, or, at least of individuals bearing the same last name: Samuel Rohrer and Elizabeth Rohrer. The ancestry of Samuel Rohrer is not known at this writing. As reported above, Samuel Rohrer and his wife, Elizabeth Rohrer, were living in l860 in Lancaster County, ages 74 and 69 respectively, making their birth years l786 and l79l.
Elizabeth Rohrer Rohrer, mother of Elizabeth Rohrer Tombow, was the daughter of Christian Rohrer and Catherine Neff. Christian Rohrer was a wealthy landowner of Lancaster County. He was born 23 October l74l, the son of John Rohrer and and Maria Souder. He died 27 June l804 in Lancaster County [Deeds, U-3-6ll, Y-3-505, 4-l4 (l804), l4-l (l806), l5-34 (l8l7), and H-5-93 (l825)].
John Rohrer was born in March of l696 in Alsace, France. Maria Souder was born in Manheim, Germany, on 24 February l7l6. John Rohrer died 23 November l77l in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania, aged 75 years. His wife, Maria Souder Rohrer, died ll May l769 in her 54th year in Lancaster County, Pennsylvania (Mrs. Susan Henning Scrapbooks).
